Diary 10 : Grand Canyon of West Bengal : Gangani

If you were to glimpse at the picture above , maybe even for a split second, you would have been transported thousands of kilometers away to the Grand Canyon of USA. And once there, you could wish to stay and marvel at one of nature's finest masterpieces ever created. Or else, you could come back to reality and witness a similar land form, closer home. For those returning back, Gangani, tucked away in the Garhbeta region of West Midnapore district of West Bengal, can happily satiate your wanderlust.

Once infamous for Maoist activities, the entire region has been off the tourists' map for the past decade. Lately most of their activities have ceased and slowly, it is on its way to becoming one of most preferred weekend destinations near Kolkata. Located approximately 180kms away from Kolkata, Gangani, till date remains one of West Bengal's best hidden jewels, just waiting there to be explored.

Winter is probably the best season to get lost in the canyons. And if you are lucky enough to get caught in a slight December(you can hope for a depression) drizzle, the greenery shrouding the red earth structures present a sight to behold. The earth is visible in different hues of red, which accentuate the presence of erosion. It feels as if you can travel way back in time and witness the erosion by a mighty river(Silabati), aided by the howling winds.

This beautiful canyon has stood the test of time. It finds place in one of the greatest epics : The Mahabharata. As the legend goes, this entire land was under the rule of a fierce monster named 'Bakasura'. ;Bheem', our protagonist had slain 'Bakasura' and freed the poor villagers from his evil clutches. Epics and history don't always go hand in hand. Sometimes there are conflicts about the origins of a particular place. For instance, once Siharuddin Bugrasah, the son of Samaduddin Firoj Shah, the erstwhile ruler of Bengal had occupied this area. Hence, this was named Bagri after him.

A regular tourist won't get into a conflict. Instead he would rather conclude that both 'Bakasura' and Siharuddin had fantastic tastes since they both occupied such a marvelous landscape and ruled over it!

If it's an overcast day, and her only grandchild has skipped school to stay with her and their two cows, you can hope to meet this old woman. She is as ancient as the land itself and she will be happy to enthrall you with tales of 'Bakasura' and 'Bheem'. Those stories might induce laughter and disbelief in us, encapsulated within our city walls. But if you decided to give a little time to the canyon growing on you, visualizing the battle scenes will be child's play.

Here's her grandchild and that's his idea of bunking school. His favorite past time ? Weaving stories around the bends of the river interlaced with the steep gorge.

The beauty of Gangani lies in it's ability to camouflage itself well with the surrounding hills and hillocks. In some angles, it feels as if the canyon goes on endlessly, merging with the horizon. The greenery complements the Red-Yellow soil combination of the canyon walls turning it into a delight for the eyes.

The whole landscape manages to evoke a sense of yearning deep inside one's mind. As you try hard to look back in time in your quest to trace the origin of such a magical place, you are left intrigued by the past. And all the forces of erosion and creation join hands to paint a picture of a long forgotten world. A world which you long to be a part of. A world where freedom had no boundaries. And today, you can't help but stand mesmerized by the sheer grandeur of the canyon, bathed in the kind of an afterglow, we used to trust, back in our childhood.

P.S. Here's a tribute to my amazing team, without whose support, Gangani wouldn't have been ticked off from my bucket list.

L-R : Me, Somok Da, Santanu Da, Aritra and Nilabrata. (We appear tiny against the facade of 'Bakasura's Cave')

P.P.S We achieved quite a feat that day by covering 450 kms through rain, dirt, red soil and asphalt on our beloved motorcycles. Kudos to the men and their machines !

Diary 4 : Kulik Wildlife Sanctuary

Yep ! Three cheerful Asian Open Bill Storks just greeted you :D This is surely not a dream ! Or maybe it is. It indeed is a dream come true for many of the birders and bird enthusiasts out there !
Now, every dream, in order to come true must occupy a 3-dimensional space and a fourth dimensional time as well.Let me tell you about this one.

The Place :

This dream is centered around the Kulik Wildlife Sanctuary in Raiganj, West Bengal, India.
Feel the contours of the dream.

The Kulik river has carefully crafted a beautiful oxbow lake inside the forest perimeters.Along the oxbow lake a deep forest has developed over decades to serve as the second home to one of the most majestic winged creatures ever - The Asian Open Bill Stork .
Apart from this , one can find 164 different species of birds( my amateur birdwatching eye could spot only 11 ! ) depending upon the seasonal timings.Sounds exciting right ?

Okay then ! Let's get down to the little boring but somewhat important details !

Getting There :

By road - Kulik WSL is located at a distance of 430 km from Kolkata and 185 km from Siliguri. The National Highway NH34 (infamous for footwide potholes and imaginary asphalt layering in parts :P ) connects Kolkata to Kulik. And if you've ever been to Darjeeling or Siliguri or Gangtok or to any of those Northerly places by bus or a car then you must have crossed this place. For the highway cuts right through the jungle. It is indeed difficult to imagine a forest with a national highway running through it ! The trucks are not exactly a part of the flora or fauna !

By Railway - Radhikapur Express(departing from Kolkata Station) stops at Raiganj. It is a 10-11 hour journey.Bookings can be done online at India Railways.

By Air - Nearest airport is Bagdogra
airport in Siliguri which is 180 km away.Another option is Kolkata Airport at a distance of 430 km.

Place to Stay :

Kulik , Raiganj is not a tourist-heavy place.Which means lodging facilities are limited. The best place to stay will be the Raiganj Tourist Lodge maintained by West Bengal Tourism Department.Advance Bookings can be made at WBTDCL .

Time to Visit :
The birds start arriving from early June. The nesting season begins soon. And a profusion of 70,000-80,000 migratory birds flock the forest during the breeding season.Ideal time to visit : October
to Early November.

Keeping all these in mind , planning a trip to Kulik for a longer weekend can be made easily through the dimply-lit 15 inch laptop seated infront of you ! Make sure your wifi is on too :D

Now that all your plans are made ,bookings done, you're ready to roll !

Plural
The Raiganj Tourist Lodge compound has around 30 trees and in each of these trees there are 10-20 nests. Most of these are abandoned now as the birds start departing from mid November and these pictures have been captured in late December.Within a span of one month, the abandoned nests manage to invoke an unearthly sense of melancholy for what had once been ,a tree bustling with flocks of storks. The background score - a crescendo of the cacophony of a hundred birds all voicing their opinions simultaneously !

Singular

The Kulik Wildlife Sanctuary :

The gate leading to the sanctuary remains open from 10a.m till 6 p.m in the evening. If you happen to find it closed and you can't wait to get inside then I have a tip for you.Follow the barbed fencing along the highway and you will come across an opening, made solely for the local children involved in clearing of the fallen leaves and dusting the trail through the forest.

Get right in.

Climb up the watch-tower.And slowly , very slowly just sink in the scene.

An adult Asian Open Bill Stork.

Wingspan similar to a Pegasus !

                                            A fulfilling Mother.A Hungry Childhood.

The First Taste of Flight.

Sharing the same plate over lunch.

Three is company !

Okay now too much time spent with the birdies ! It's time to get down and explore the rest of the Sanctuary. The path is laid out in the form of cute colourful, eccentric bricks. They take you around a fixed path that encircles the entire area.Inbetween you can spot the ox-bow lake, some rundown watchtowers that are out of bounds because they're falling apart real quick. For music you can definitely tune into a huge band of frequencies generated by a profusion of insects and birds. An occassional truck horn might intrude if the driver encounters a particularly obstinate cow or a goat ambling on the National Highway !

And if you're lucky enough you can definitely spot the highlights along the path and the lake,  each taking turns to create a visual treat.

A watchtower without a heart.

This has to be the most heartwrenching sight ever. This clearly proves that we still lack the basic infrastructure to support these beautiful creatures.Do your bit to save them.Spread awareness like they spread their wings. And even if that results in lowering their deaths, then you can feel proud for doing good to this world.

His gaze should cheer up your spirits. The depth of his eyes equal the phantom depths of the mysteries still left in this world. His wings have given mankind, another new realm to conquer  the infinite.the blue sky.

Two young guns sharing a private moment together. This picture describes what is meant by binary in this universe.

"The Sense of an Ending "

Dreams end.And we go on living happily ever after. It is during the short duration of our dreams , that we explore a new kingdom complete with its own set of characters and colors and stories. This dream was of a special kind.Freedom found a new meaning, perched atop the wingtips of these storks.Time stood motionless as a testament to the thousands of kilometres these birds travel in their lifetime. Each one has a unique story a million miles long. And that sets each one apart from the other.Just like in us, humans.
We differ.
And we unite.
In countless dreams.
For centuries and beyond.

Diary 2 : Two Wheeling Through Shantiniketan (Poush Mela Memories)

                          The Red Soil Calls On

Shantiniketan and Poush Mela are synonymous in an unique way.Strung together with the common love for red soil and soulful folk tunes that have defined human desires and dreams for a long, long time.
During this fair that goes by the name of "Poush Mela" , Shantiniketan comes alive with people pouring in from India and rest of the world as well. But what happens when you put too much traffic in a peaceful Indian village ?Well it gets constricted and cars cannot move an inch through the jam!Any solution ? Yes , there is !Chuck the four wheels and bring in the two wheels ! Vroooooom ! We are ready to rock and roll !

A combined Engine Displacement of 500cc !

A Pulsar 150 and a Royal Enfield Classic 350 together form our Four Wheels that will help us conquer the 180 kms of asphalt that stretches inbetween Kolkata and Shantiniketan. All checks done and we kickstart our thrilling ride !

                          First Leg : The Ride

The jackets, helmets riding gloves and the backpacks are adjusted and checked.Clock reads 4.55am and temperature is a depressing 9 degrees above zero ! Ignition opens up the engine and it roars back to life with the throttle. On a quiet, winter Kolkata dawn, two bikes with four people start the journey of a lifetime.
The roads are empty and foggy. The headlights are on in full glow.Thankfully we cannot feel the chill due to our gears which shield us perfectly well from the biting cold winds.Within half an hour we have crossed Dankuni. The Durgapur Expressway is as enticing as ever with its smooth black asphalt that oddly resembles a runway for the two motorcycles involved here !The speedometer easily crosses 100 and the rpm needle indicates there is still more room upwards! We encountered very few trucks and 1 hr 15 minutes later , we stopped for a brief tea break at Shaktigarh. But instead of tea we had fresh coconut water that rejuvenated our senses!

Trust me on this.
Coconut water tasted heavenly at that instant. So the next time you are stopping by somewhere that sells coconut water,I suggest you definitely drink some!

The remaining part of the journey was equally uneventful. The Villages and rice fields and the clouds and the distant trees look much better when you're on a             motorcycle because you get to                                                   experience them firsthand.I recommend taking a bike trip             atleast once during your lifetime! You will love it ! 3 and a half hours later we found ourselves completely taken in by Tagore's own land. The red soil called and we answered back. The place has a different essence. It goes on in a tranquil , languid sort of a way but nonetheless it manages to touch one's heart.First time you step on the red soil,it instantly establishes a connection with you and maybe for this connection , people revisit Shantiniketan time and time again !

                                     Second Leg :

                           Exploring Shantiniketan

You know you're in Shantiniketan's Prantik area when you see beautiful houses with magnificent gardens and lawns lined up in a perfect fashion. It soothes and refreshes those nerves in your eyes that grow tired with every moment in a concrete jungle.

The flowers and the surroundings blend in perfectly. And if you were to go a little "far from the madding crowd" you can almost feel the nature's pulse echoing around you.Prantik is quieter than the main Viswabharati area.If you are looking for inner peace coupled with beautiful surroundings,Prantik and beyond is the place to check out !

Prantik Station

Post lunch we are ready for Poush Mela ! As soon as we near the university grounds a huge group of people confirms our belief that we are finally here !Off we go then !

All for Sale !
